Description
What this product does: The Morningstar ProStar charge controller is a voltage regulator that keeps your batteries from being over charged by your solar panels. Most “12-volt” panels put out about 16 V to 20 volts, but “12-volt” batteries require 14 V to 14.5 V to become fully charged, so without regulation the batteries will be damaged from overcharging.
Recommended use(s): This charge controller may be used for charging gel, sealed and flooded lead-acid batteries.
Advantages of this product: The ProStar is a small, single module 30-A, 12-V and 24-V, PWM (pulse width modulation) charge controller with four-stage charging (bulk charge, absorption, float and equalize [except gel cell batteries]) and temperature compensation. It has LED status lights to show the charging status, battery status and faults. The built-in LCD digital meter can display battery volts, solar amps and load amps. The ProStar has a built-in low voltage disconnect (LVD) to protect the battery bank from complete discharge.
Disadvantages of this product: At 11.4 V the non-adjustable low voltage disconnect is set too low for good battery health.
Additional notes: Order separately a “RTS” temperature probe for best battery life in hot environments.
